Copyright and licensing

How we license our content

We intend to charge for some of these books. That makes copyright something that has to be checkable by someone else, not something we assure you about. So this page lists every official source we relied on, the day we read it, and a hash you can re-compute yourself — plus the things we deliberately did not touch.

What official material we used

Facts only: how many questions a section has, how long it runs, what it is weighted at, what may be brought into the room. Each entry below shows what we took from it, when we read it, and a SHA-256 of the page text on that day.

To check one: fetch the URL, remove the script and style blocks, strip the HTML tags, collapse whitespace, and take the SHA-256 of what is left. That is exactly what our capture script does. A mismatch means the page has changed since we read it — which is also how we discover that a fact we relied on may no longer hold.

The licence permits commercial use

Both bodies publish under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International, which permits copying, adaptation and commercial use provided the source is attributed. Their own copyright statements: NSW Department of Education and ACARA.

The attribution we use

This exact text appears on the cover of every book. It is not retyped there — both this page and the PDF renderer read it from one file, so they cannot say different things:

What we deliberately did not use

  • The official sample tests. The Department publishes sample questions and answers; their copyright is held by Cambridge University Press & Assessment, and the Department states that its CC BY 4.0 licence does not extend to them. None of that material appears in our books — not as originals, and not rewritten.
  • Any logo, crest or trade mark. Not the Department’s, not ACARA’s, not any school’s.
  • Third-party question banks, scans or workbooks. Nothing was scanned, OCR’d, or adapted from a commercial publisher.
  • Stock imagery with unclear provenance. The illustrations in the books were generated for them.

Who wrote the questions, and how they are checked

Every question is original work by QuizPaste, produced from parameterised templates with a fixed seed so a book is reproducible byte for byte. The reading passages are original prose written for these books. Distractors are built from named misconceptions rather than random numbers.

Every answer is re-derived by an independent solver before the book is rendered, and a question that fails is never written to the file. Logic puzzles get a second check: they are brute-forced and thrown out unless the clues admit exactly one arrangement.

They have not been reviewed by a qualified teacher, and we do not claim anywhere that they have. Year-level appropriateness is a judgement we are not qualified to certify. Both the books and the pages that offer them say so.

No affiliation

QuizPaste is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or approved by the NSW Department of Education, ACARA, Cambridge University Press & Assessment, or any school. Using material published under an open licence does not create a relationship with the publisher, and we do not imply one.

The Department states that it does not recommend or endorse coaching for the placement test, and that there is no credible research showing coaching helps a child gain entry. We quote that where it is relevant rather than arguing with it.

Email copyright@quizpaste.com with the URL or the book, and which part you believe is yours. What we commit to:

  • A reply within 24 hours, including a request for anything we need to assess the claim.
  • Removal within 24 hours of confirming it — the material comes down first and we discuss afterwards.
  • A note on this page recording what was removed and when, so the record is public rather than quietly amended.

Nothing has been removed to date. This paragraph will change if that stops being true.

Questions

Do you use the official practice questions?
No. The Department publishes sample tests, and their copyright is held by Cambridge University Press & Assessment — the Department states plainly that its CC BY 4.0 licence does not extend to them. So none of that material appears in our books, in original or rewritten form. What we take from the Department is factual: how many questions each section has, how long it runs, what it is weighted at, and what a child may bring in.
Can you legally use the curriculum and test-structure material at all?
Yes. Both ACARA and the NSW Department of Education publish under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0, which permits commercial use and adaptation provided the source is attributed. The attribution text we use appears on this page and on the cover of every book, generated from the same file so the two cannot drift apart.
What is the content hash for?
So you can check us. Each source below lists the date we read it and a SHA-256 of the page text as it was that day. Fetch the page, strip the markup, hash the text, and compare. If it differs, the page has changed since we read it — which is also how we find out that a fact we relied on may no longer hold.
Who wrote the practice questions?
We did, from scratch, by machine from parameterised templates with a fixed seed. Nothing is scanned, adapted, or copied from a question bank. The reading passages are original prose written for these books.
How are the answers checked?
Every answer is re-derived by an independent solver before the book is rendered, and a question that fails is never written to the file. Logic puzzles are additionally brute-forced and rejected unless the clues allow exactly one arrangement. They have NOT been reviewed by a qualified teacher, and we do not claim otherwise anywhere.
